Mets interested in Alex Bregman: report

The Mets are among the teams interested in a free agent third baseman Alex Bregmanreports Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.

In addition to the Mets, the Astros, Yankees, Red Sox, Tigers and Blue Jays are also interested in Bregman, according to Feinsand.

The Astros reportedly extended a six-year offer to Bregman, who declined Houston’s one-year qualifying offer. But his return there seems questionable at best, as the Astros recently traded the infielder Isaac Paredes and also linked to a possible trade for the Cardinals’ third baseman Nolan Arenado.

As far as the Mets’ interest goes, it’s safe to assume that signing Bregman would at least allow for a reunion with them Pete Alonso less likely.

David Stearns And Steve Cohen have openly expressed the Mets’ desire to keep Alonso, whose market is moving slowly.

In a world where the Mets add Bregman, they could potentially move Mark Vientos to first base.

Bregman, who has never had more than 97 strikeouts in a season and has been one of the best hitters in baseball for nearly a decade, could be a strong addition and serve as protection for the newcomer Juan Soto.

In addition to Bregman strengthening the lineup and bringing him together Francisco Lindor would give the Mets one of the best defensive left side of the infield in the game.

If the Mets believe Bregman’s relatively poor performance in 2024 was a blip (he had an OPS+ of 118 and the lowest OBP since his rookie season), it might be wise to pounce on it.

It also makes sense that Bregman might end up with the Americans.

The Bombers addressed their pitching at the signing Max Fried and act for Devin Williamsbut they haven’t expanded their roster yet after losing Soto.

The Yanks have been linked to a possible trade Cody Bellingerbut could potentially accommodate both Bellinger and Bregman if the price is right.
