EDMONTON – There’s the big one, and then there’s the next big one.
The Edmonton Oilers had both. First, Wayne Gretzky captained the team from the 1980s through four Stanley Cups. Gretzky also collected some records, many of which still exist today.
The next great, Connor McDavid, was no slouch. He erased some of Gretzky’s records while being in the conversation for countless others.
And he just came across another one.
McDavid is one of only three players to average one assist per game in their entire NHL career. Mario Lemieux and Gretzky are the only other players to achieve this.
This is a great list to be on.

McDavid has recorded 674 assists in 672 games. Lemieux recorded 1,033 assists in 915 career games, while Gretzky recorded 1,963 assists in 1,487 games.
Earlier this year, the Oilers captain reached the impressive milestone of 1,000 career points. He’s been busy ever since; His career points total is now 1023.
He has 41 points in 27 games this season. He is currently on a five-game point streak and has scored five goals and eight assists. After a slow start, McDavid has certainly hit his stride of late.
With 52 games remaining on the Oilers’ schedule this season, many more records can (and should) be broken before this year’s playoffs.
It will be interesting to see what the Next Great One does next.
