Sean Payton: Bo Nix doesn’t shy away, gives you the confidence that you’re in the game

Through the first three quarters of Sunday’s game against the Colts, it looked like the Broncos were seizing a golden opportunity to solidify their playoff position.

The Colts jumped out to a 10-0 lead and held a 13-10 lead early in the final quarter, thanks in part to three interceptions by Broncos quarterback Bo Nix. However, the Colts kept giving the ball back to the Broncos and Nix finally broke through.

Nix threw two touchdowns in the fourth quarter and the Broncos moved to sixth place in the AFC and were 9-5 on the season with a 31-13 win. On Monday, head coach Sean Payton said the performance showed why the Broncos believe in themselves even when the games aren’t exactly game-changing.

“Later in this game, when we needed it“He didn’t bat an eyelid,” Payton said, via the team’s website. “He’s got a maturity and a certain moxie about him that I love.” I think it’s contagious for the team. When you have that at the quarterback position, your team knows you’re in every game. When you don’t have it, it’s quite difficult because deep down you know that’s not the case. You notice that especially this year and with this team.”

Nix came into the NFL with a lot of college starts under his belt, and that likely helps him handle difficult stretches of game better than other rookies. That benefited the Broncos on Sunday and was a big factor in their success this season.
